Top 10 Things To Do in Thredbo

Take a tour of Thredbo

Thredbo is a beautiful mountain village, built in a gorgeous valley with alpine peaks towering around it. Beautiful and green in summer, white and bustling in winter it offers something for anyone wanting to experience a Thredbo holiday and stay in beautiful Thredbo accommodation.

Whilst we are all eagerly awaiting the beginning of this year’s snow season this autumn we are all reminded why we love life in the mountains so much. Stunning sunny days with views that go on forever. If you are lucky enough to take a ride up the Kosciuszko Express chair you are greeted by a stunning alpine landscape.

Apart from the obvious activities of skiing and boarding during a snow holiday there are so many more things to experience about Thredbo so I thought I collate a little list of my top 10 things to do around the village:

1. Best Shopping
I have to admit that my favourite shop in the village is JK Gallery. It is like a treasure trove of scented candles, beautiful body lotions, luxurious throw cushions & blankets and all other luxury items no one needs but loves to have in their homes. Jayne the owner is a Thredbo icon with impeccable taste. Certainly my go to place for any gifts for my girlfriends.

2. Best Coffee
I have got to give this one to the guys at the Thredbo Bakery. Kyle and his crew make me an awesome cappuccino every day and their cheery service certainly puts a smile on my face.

3. Best Lunches
Central Road is a newly opened stylish café in the village square. Their lunch menu is delightful and the décor is stylish and comfortable without being pretentious. This is certainly a local’s favorite and the café is buzzing with activity every day. I thoroughly recommend their Ruben sandwich with chorizo and sauerkraut for lunch.

4. Best Dinner
Certainly Knickerbocker Restaurant. Their French country style menu does not disappoint. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great and they are very relaxed even if you book in with a big group. Definitely leave room for desert!

5. Best activity for kids
We can never go wrong with taking our children to the Thredbo pool. They love swimming and the water slide provides hours of fun. In summer the only thing that tops it is a ride on the bob sled.

6. What to do for non-skiers or boarders?
The Kosciuszko Express Chairlift is open to foot passengers all year round. It is fantastic for holiday makers to catch a ride on the scenic chairlift and walk around in the snow. The views from the top are spectacular over Thredbo Resort, the Snowy Mountains and on clear days all the way down the valley towards Jindabyne. At the top station you will find Eagle’s Nest restaurant for a hot chocolate or lunch.

7. Best winter event
The opening weekend in Thredbo is hard to top. There will be poolside parties at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, ice sculptures by Japanese ice sculptor Kenji Ogawa and a free concert of Sneaky Sound System after the fireworks display on Saturday night. If you love French champagne as much as I do you need to get tickets for the annual Long Lunch. Set up outside in the village square it will feature a 3 course meal, live music and decorations.

8. Best Après
Après at The Denman Hotel is legendary and a must do during your snow holiday. The Denman Hotel is Thredbo’s only boutique luxury hotel to have an open air bar on the deck in true European style.

9. Best party
The Smirnoff Snow Dome will be back with an array of parties this winter. These outdoor parties at the bottom of the slopes are legendary and party revelers were even treated to fresh snow whilst dancing away, enjoying cool drinks and being treated to some of Australia’s best DJ’s.

10. Flare Run
This is a special event and the kids just adore it. Come to Friday Flat on a Thursday night, purchase an LED flare and get your kids to take part in the Kids Flare Run. As the sun sets the kids will go up Easy Does It Chairlifts and will ski down waving their flares accompanied by snow sport instructors). As they reach the bottom there will be a fireworks display. Whether you are a local or a guest this is one activity you should not miss this winter season.
