Mount Kosciuszko Thredbo

Walk to the Top of Australia!!!

Date: 2 February 2011

If you have not climbed Mount Kosciuszko before, you are missing out on one of the most spectacular walks in Australia.

The chairlift lets you admire the view of Thredbo village, where you can clearly see the effects of the devastating 1997 landslide.

Listen carefully for the gurgle of the stream below, running between an array of wildflowers, native trees and boulders.

The air is clean and unpolluted, which you notice more as you disembark the chairlift and begin the walk.

If you have forgotten the sunscreen or need to use the loo, Eagle's Nest Restaurant is located at the top of the lift, in the old lift terminal. Eagle's Nest is the highest restaurant in Australia, and on a clear day from their top floor you can see all the way down to the Victorian border.

Eagle's Nest has a delicious menu and an extremely well stocked bar. Their burgers are superb in summer, and you can't go past without stopping for a special hot chocolate on a drizzly day. They also serve dinner in this alluring restaurant, for which you catch the gondola up the mountain and are dropped right on the doorstep.

Before attempting the Kosciuszko walk, you may want to pick up a Walks Map from the tourist information centre. This guide has both the Kosciuszko Summit walk and the Kosciuszko Lookout walk labelled as 'moderate', however on the actual track there are people of many different ages, from young to old.

The Lookout walk, which is 4 km long and expected to take between 1-2 hours to complete is a lovely short walk for the youngsters, or for those not too keen on travelling all the way to the top.

The Summit walk is expected to take 4-6 hours to complete, and is 13 km long. The top of Mount Kosciuszko is stunning, whether it is a clear day and you can see for kilometres, or a cloudy day and you can hardly see the tips of outstretched fingers, it is an incredible feeling to know that you are standing on top of Australia.

Whatever you do, don't forget the camera! The magnificent scenery will take your breath away.
